Looking for a sunken city before breakfast

finding Neapolis
6 AM swim

We went looking for the underwater ruins of ancient Neapolis in Tunisia! Dr. Laura Harrison, our Chief Scientist, and Dr. Caroline Nickerson, who leads our partnerships and community, flew all the way from Florida, and we took a paddle boat out along the coast of Neapolis at 6 AM, hoping to catch a glimpse of the submerged city from the surface.

For reference: there is nothing that points you to the ruins. We went out twice, and the second time the water was so clear that we believe we could finally see them below us: fragments of roads, walls, and stairs from a coastal settlement that was once a hub for manufacturing garum, the Romans' beloved fermented fish sauce.

Neapolis was destroyed by an earthquake in 365 AD. It sits near my hometown, Nabeul, just a 15-minute walk from my house. This is why I love Tanit XR. Tunisia has so many stories, on land and under the sea, and sharing them is the best part!

(My GoPro broke the second it touched the water, so no underwater shots this time.)
