Field notes · February 2026

The last few days were stressful and heartbreaking: my hometown was severely flooded in Tunisia's worst rainfall in 70 years. Schools closed across the capital and the coastal towns, and I watched from afar as the streets I grew up on filled with water.
And then, when the storm passed, something unexpected happened. When the water went down, the storm had stripped the sand off the coast and exposed parts of Neapolis, the Roman city a 15-minute walk from my house.
Storms like this damage old sites, and sometimes they uncover new ones for a little while. Within days our volunteers were out there scanning the newly revealed ruins in 3D, before the sea covers them again.
